The third suspect in the May 2022 killing of 17-year-old Grayson Green at a Marietta graduation party has been transferred to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. Records revealed that. Tahkel Smart, of Dallas, was moved from the Douglas County jail, where he was held on unrelated charges, to the Cobb jail Friday afternoon.
Smart, 22, and 17-year-old twins Ne’riyah and Ne’cquo Vargas are accused of shooting Green to death at the Walton Village Apartment complex off Austell Road on May 21, 2022.
After an investigation, which included police pleading with residents and potential witnesses to come forward with information, a grand jury indicted Smart and the Vargas twins a year after the shooting.
Police released a video last fall that showed partygoers fleeing the scene. Following the incident, Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta and the apartment complex’s management offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.
Marietta police spokesman Officer Chuck McPhilamy said Marietta police worked closely with authorities in Virginia to apprehend the twins, who were from Newport News, Virginia.
According to records with the Cobb Sheriff’s Office, the Vargas twins were booked into the Cobb jail on June 28.
The twins and Smart are charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The three men have also been charged with various violations of Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.
All three suspects are being held at the Cobb jail without bond.
