Time to file Homestead Exemption

Share

It’s that time of year to be thinking about filing for a homestead exemption. A homestead exemption can give you tax breaks on what you pay in property taxes – reducing the amount of property taxes homeowners owe on their legal residence.

To obtain an exemption, you must file with the county or city where your home is located. Each county has different applications and required documents. Various types of homestead exemptions are available, including those based on assessed home value and homeowner age.

Homeowners with an existing basic homestead exemption do not need to reapply, but changes in property deeds (such as divorce, inheritance, or refinancing) may affect exemptions. Homeowners should verify their exemptions before the April 1 deadline.
