The search for Gary Jones, a Westminster Schools coach and teacher, continues, marking the 15 day since he was last seen on Lake Oconee. Jones disappeared on his 50th birthday, alongside his fiancée, Joycelyn Nicole Wilson, whose body was recovered the day after they were last seen. Investigators have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding their disappearance, with Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills describing the case as a “death investigation” but not a homicide.
Sills suggested that the boat the couple were using was not suitable for the lake’s conditions, and confirmed that Jones’ belongings were found abandoned on the vessel.
Wilson, a Spelman College math instructor, was found days earlier with her cellphone in her hand. Authorities discovered Jones’ wallet on the boat, but have not located his cellphone. Cadaver dogs are being brought back as the sheriff’s office, along with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, continues to search the lake, which is over 80 feet deep in some areas.
Jones and Joycelyn Nicole Wilson were seen in a small fishing boat on Lake Oconee on his 50th birthday. The two who had recently become engaged and were planning to marry in March. The couple’s sudden disappearance has devastated their families and friends, and the Jones family expressed their gratitude for the support in their search. As authorities pursue leads, the investigation continues to unfold.
Jones’ family thanked all who have looked for the science teacher. “We thank you for all the well wishes, the prayers and most importantly your efforts in helping us find Gary,” the family said. “This has been a horrendous experience for our family but we will not rest until he is found.
