Patrick Anderson II, 26, of Smyrna, was convicted for sexually assaulting a woman at knifepoint early one morning in September 2020. A jury found the Cobb County man guilty on multiple charges including rape, aggravated sodomy, kidnapping, and aggravated assault.
According to Cobb District Attorney Flynn D. Broady Jr., the assault case against Anderson started on Sept. 15, 2020, around 5:40 a.m. when he knocked on a woman’s door at a Cobb apartment complex and asked to use her phone to call for roadside assistance. The woman allowed him to use her phone, but after Anderson ended the call, he tried to force his way into her apartment. The woman, who was not harmed, was able to push her door closed and lock Anderson out.
A few minutes later, at 5:45 a.m,.the assault victim in the case encountered Andeson. The 22-year-old woman, who lived in the same apartment complex, left her unit and got into her car. As she was on the phone with 911, the first woman told the dispatcher she could see Anderson as he got into the victim’s backseat.
Once Anderson was in her car, he brandished a knife and told the victim to drive away. He directed her to park in front of a neighboring apartment building, climbed into the front seat, and ordered the woman to take off her clothes. He then sexually assaulted her, Broady said.
While being assaulted, the woman saw an opportunity and used her Apple Watch to call 911 from her wrist. An emergency dispatcher answered, but their voice was “loud enough for Anderson to hear it and freak out,” the woman said during the trial.
Anderson took the watch and threw it to the ground as he began questioning the woman about the call. She denied that she made a call to 911 and said she must have accidentally answered an incoming call. During the exchange, a different car pulled up alongside them. Anderson began looking for his knife. Unable to find his weapon, Anderson left with the woman’s keys, wallet, and watch.
The description of Anderson matched the first woman’s description and that of the victim. The D.A. praised the victim’s resilience during such a traumatizing incident involving a deadly weapon.
Broady confirmed that Anderson’s sentencing hearing will be held on March 3.
