An Atlanta man, Leroy Hinton, has been apprehended and charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the November killing of beloved Marietta Middle School teacher, Jason Ogbomoh.
According to court documents, Hinton, 30, was booked into the Fulton County Jail on Monday. The charges stem from an incident on Nov. 12 at approximately 3 a.m. when Hinton allegedly shot 25-year-old Ogbomoh at 81 Peachtree Street, located near Underground Atlanta and the Five Points MARTA station. Ogbomoh was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Hinton, who does not have a prior arrest history in Atlanta, is accused of firing multiple shots into Ogbomoh’s torso, according to arrest warrants. Police on the scene indicated suspicions of a preceding altercation leading to the shooting.
Jason Ogbomoh was not only a dedicated computer science teacher at Marietta Middle but also a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in computer science at Georgia State University.
Described as a role model and mentor by school Principal Diona Brown, Ogbomoh’s impact on the school community was profound and irreplaceable. Beyond his academic contributions, Ogbomoh was a talented musician, creating music for a fanbase he cultivated during his time at the University of Georgia.
Ogbomoh’s obituary highlighted his diverse talents and passions. He was laid to rest on Nov. 28 at the Georgia Memorial Park on Cobb Parkway.
Hinton made his first appearance in court on Tuesday morning, where he was denied bond and will remain in the Fulton County Jail.
