Cobb County Water System Reports Multiple Sewage Overflows Impacting Local Creeks

The Cobb County Water System continues its sewer overflows for 2025 with two new separate sewer overflows. Both of the newest incidents resulted in wastewater discharges into local waterways.
A 9,000-gallon wastewater sewer overflow was reported that occurred on January 8, 2025, in Smyrna. The overflow, caused by grease buildup, took place at 2217 Adderbury Court and discharged into a tributary of Nickajack Creek.
The Water System was notified of the overflow at 1 p.m. on January 8, and the situation was resolved by 3:30 p.m. The initial report came from 2516 Haddenham Lane, where the crew discovered a manhole spilling sewage due to an unsecured lid. The sewage left an eight-foot by 20-foot trail, which ultimately flowed into the tributary.
In a separate incident, a 1,560-gallon wastewater sewer overflow occurred on January 9, 2025, in Acworth. The overflow, caused by grease buildup, occurred at 4621 Waters Edge Lane and discharged into a tributary of Clark Creek.
The Water System was notified of the overflow at 8:18 a.m. on January 9, and the situation was resolved by 10:40 a.m. Upon arrival, the crew found a manhole spilling sewage despite a secured lid. The sewage left a 20-foot by 40-foot path that flowed into a storm drain, eventually entering a tributary of Clark Creek.
In the first incident, the crew cleared the blockage and applied enzymes to the affected areas. No solids or fish kills were observed during the cleanup first instance .
In the second incident, the crew used a jet machine to clear the blocked sewer line, cleaned up rags, and applied lime to the affected area. No fish kills were reported during with cleanup.

- Incident Details: Wastewater created a 20-foot by 20-foot area and a 5-foot by 60-foot trail. Additionally, a second manhole discharge caused a 10-foot by 80-foot trail into the creek.
