Share

Former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, was honored during the week with a state funeral attended by all five living U.S. presidents: Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. This rare gathering of former commanders-in-chief paid tribute to Carter, the longest-living U.S. president in history.

The funeral service, held at Washington National Cathedral on January 9, 2025, was also attended by former first ladies—Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Melania Trump—along with first lady Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and second gentleman Doug Emhoff.

Carter’s extraordinary life and lasting legacy were at the forefront of the ceremony. He was remembered not only for his presidency but also for his humanitarian work, public health contributions, and lifelong dedication to global peace and public service. Carter was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, a leader who exemplified compassion and a commitment to the betterment of the world.

Final Journey and Burial in Plains, Georgia

Carter’s final journey ended in his home state of Georgia, where he was laid to rest beside his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, at their home in Plains, Georgia. The family’s procession next to the hearst mirrored a poignant moment from Carter’s 1977 inauguration parade. Loved ones were able to bid their final goodbyes at the church in Plains that had been central to Carter’s spiritual life.

His modest ranch house, where Carter spent much of his post-presidency, will be preserved as a museum managed by the National Park Service.

National Mourning and Flag Tribute

Carter’s death prompted a national day of mourning, with flags across the country remaining at half-staff for 30 days in honor of his memory. The flags will continue to fly at half-staff during President Donald Trump’s second inauguration on January 20, 2025.

A Lasting Legacy

Carter’s legacy will be preserved at his home and burial site, which will soon become a museum, ensuring that his contributions to service, peace, and compassion will continue to inspire future generations. His passing marks the end of a remarkable life, one that touched countless lives through selfless service and dedication to humanitarian causes.
