Two 18-year-olds, Garrett Tyler Betts of Douglasville and Caleb Evan Hasty of Dallas, have been indicted by a Cobb grand jury for their alleged involvement in an August street race that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old.

As outlined in their indictment, the charges for the pair include first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, street racing, and speeding.

Betts was arrested in October, while Hasty was booked into the Cobb jail a month later. The charges stem from their alleged involvement in a street race on the night of August 26, where they were reportedly racing at speeds of 100 mph in a 45-mph zone on the East-West Connector.

According to police reports, Hasty, driving a 2009 Pontiac G8, acknowledged knowing Betts, and that both were returning home after attending a car meet. Hasty admitted to driving in close proximity to Betts’ Mustang before it lost control.

As they approached a right curve in the road, Betts allegedly failed to maintain his lane, veering onto a grass shoulder. Upon attempting to steer back onto the road, the car rotated across the westbound lanes of the East-West Connector, ultimately colliding with a tree in the center median.

The impact led to the ejection of Betts’s 15-year-old passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Betts also sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized after the crash

Jail records indicate that Both Betts and Hasty were released on $82,720 bond last month.
