Walmart settles lawsuit over weighted groceries: shoppers could get cash from $45M settlement
Share
Walmart has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit regarding alleged deceptive practices in the sale of certain weighted groceries and bagged citrus products. The lawsuit claimed that Walmart overcharged customers for these items, leading to a $45 million settlement. Eligible customers who purchased the specified products at Walmart locations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, may be entitled to cash payments.
Customers who provide proof of purchase can receive compensation equal to 2% of the total cost of the weighted goods and bagged citrus they purchased, with a maximum cap of $500 per person. Those without receipts may still be eligible for compensation ranging from $10 to $25, depending on the number of products purchased during the specified period.
To participate in the settlement, eligible customers must submit a claim online or by mail by June 5, 2024. The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in Tampa will hold a final settlement approval hearing on June 12, 2024. If there are no appeals, settlement payments will be processed after the hearing.
Payments will be made electronically through platforms such as Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or virtual prepaid Mastercard. Alternatively, claimants can request paper checks. However, it’s important to note that it may take several months for the settlement to become final and for claims to be processed, so patience is advised. Customers also have until May 22, 2024, to exclude themselves from the settlement, object to it, or comment on it.
