Pollen levels soar to near record high

Share

Atlanta is experiencing near-record high pollen levels, with last Tuesday’s overall pollen level reaching 8,740, the third highest on record. This extreme level of pollen is problematic for cars that are now resembling powder donuts, but it is especially  problematic for individuals who suffer from allergies and exercise outdoors. The blustery weather we have been experiencing serves to exacerbate the situation, intensifying allergy symptoms for many.

When pollen combines with air pollution from vehicles, it often leads to symptoms such as sniffles, sneezing, and even asthma attacks. Researchers from Emory have found that nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter from traffic can exacerbate these health issues. Particulate pollution consists of tiny particles that can be inhaled deeply into the lungs, potentially causing respiratory problems and entering the bloodstream.

For those who exercise or engage in outdoor sports, taking precautions can make exercising easier on the lungs. Monitoring the weather before heading outside is crucial, as windy, dry days tend to result in the highest pollen levels.

To mitigate the effects of pollen and pollution, athletes are advised to avoid outdoor activities during rush hour traffic and to exercise indoors when possible. Using allergy medications before going outside, particularly second-generation antihistamines like Zyrtec, Claritin, or Allegra, can help alleviate symptoms without causing drowsiness.

First-generation antihistamines like Benadryl, which have been linked to early onset dementia, should be avoided. However, a spring rain can temporarily alleviate the pollen count by washing allergens out of the air. If exercising outside, consider using a mask but ensure that you can breathe comfortably.
