Senator Ossoff launches inquiry into appeals process for VA benefits

Share

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff has initiated an inquiry with the Department of Veterans Affairs to address what he described as “unacceptable” delays that Georgia veterans are experiencing when it comes to decisions on pending benefits claims.

In a letter addressed to VA Secretary Denis McDonough, Ossoff expressed his concerns regarding extended wait times for Georgia veterans seeking decisions on their appeals for denied benefits, specifically those that are processed through the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.

He emphasized the importance of providing clear and consistent information to Georgia’s veterans and their families, who often find themselves in a state of uncertainty while waiting for benefits they may rightfully deserve.

The process for veterans in this situation works as follows: When a veteran submits a claim for compensation related to a service-connected disability and that claim is denied by the VA, they have the option to appeal that decision to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.

The board then reviews the evidence presented by the veteran and makes a determination on whether they are eligible for compensation. Unfortunately, this appeals process has been protracted, with VA officials attributing delays to a shortage of staff and the heavy caseloads faced by Veterans Law Judges.

Ossoff also posed several questions in his letter, seeking clarification on the causes of delays in the appeals process for benefits decisions. He inquired about the actions being taken to address personnel shortages within the VA and the communication procedures in place to keep veterans informed about the progress of their appeals.

Ossoff emphasized the importance of providing efficient and effective service to veterans, stressing that prolonged waiting times not only for benefits but also for the opportunity to appeal undermines the trust and faith that veterans have in our institutions, and the commitment our nation makes to those who have served in uniform.
