The Cobb County Police Department is asking the community for help in identifying a suspect in a deadly hit-and-run incident that occurred on Veterans Memorial Highway on Tuesday, February 13.

Police are actively searching for a black SUV believed to be involved in the fatal crash that occurred near the South Cobb Community Center. The crash resulted in the death of motorcyclist Christopher Johnson of Mableton, and caused serious injuries to bicyclist Melissa Winslow of Marietta.

According to the police report, the incident started with Winslow, 32, who was attempting to cross Veterans Memorial Highway on her bicycle at Puckett Drive. A westbound black SUV collided with her and then fled the scene. Winslow was thrown from her bicycle, which became entangled under the fleeing SUV before separating and coming to rest in the center turn lane of the highway.

Simultaneously, Christopher Johnson, 38, riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle east on Veterans Memorial Highway, collided with debris from Winslow’s bicycle, leading to the loss of control and Johnson being thrown from his motorcycle.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities while Winslow was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators are seeking information from the public regarding the black SUV involved in the hit-and-run. The Cobb County Police Department urges anyone with information to contact them at 770-499-3987.
