Panel recommends new names for 2 Georgia military bases, Benning and Gordon

Share

A panel reviewing the names of military bases and installations has recommended new names for two Georgia bases as well as seven others around the country. An independent commission had recommended new names for nine Army posts that now commemorate Confederate officers, part of a broader effort by the military to confront racial injustice.

Fort Gordon, Ga., would be renamed Fort Eisenhower; Fort Benning, Ga., would be renamed Fort Moore; and Fort Bragg, N.C  would be renamed Fort Liberty.

For the first time, Army bases would be renamed after Black soldiers and women. Two of the bases would be named after Black soldiers, and three would include women’s names. The U.S. secretary of defense is expected to implement the commission’s renaming plan no later than Jan. 1, 2024.
