Obama Presidential Center to Celebrate Grand Opening Over Juneteenth Weekend in Chicago

Chicago – The long-awaited Obama Presidential Center will officially open to the public over Juneteenth weekend, the Obama Foundation announced. The grand opening celebrations on the 19.3-acre Jackson Park campus are set for June 18–21, 2026.

Former President Barack Obama, who launched his political career in Chicago, called the center “a permanent home for hope” in a social media post, inviting the public to experience the museum, public spaces, and programming firsthand. “This is not a monument to the past; it is a living destination for people who refuse to accept the status quo,” he said.

The center will feature a museum, public art, a playground, spaces for community programs, and a branch of the Chicago Public Library, aiming to be a hub for education, civic engagement, and cultural celebration.

The grand opening schedule includes:

  • June 18: Dedication ceremony at the John Lewis Plaza, with performances and remarks livestreamed.
  • June 19: Campus and museum open to the public.
  • June 20–21: Community celebrations throughout the campus.

Tickets to the museum will go on sale in May, with prices aligned with other Chicago cultural institutions. While museum entry will require a timed ticket, the rest of the campus will remain free and accessible.

City officials project the center will draw 700,000 visitors annually, generate more than $3 billion in economic impact, and create over 5,000 jobs in the region.

Despite excitement over the opening, the project has faced legal challenges, construction delays, and concerns from nearby residents about rising rents and potential displacement. The Obama Foundation has pledged to address community concerns while ensuring the center serves as a resource for local residents and visitors alike.

“This grand opening is just the beginning,” said Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation and former White House advisor. “The Obama Presidential Center is about the everyday people who make our democracy work, not just those we see in the headlines.”

The opening of the center during Juneteenth weekend underscores its commitment to celebrating African American history, civic engagement, and community empowerment on Chicago’s South Side.
