Ford Recalls 1.74 Million Vehicles Amid Rearview Camera Safety Concerns

NEW YORK, NY – Ford is recalling nearly 1.74 million vehicles in the U.S. after software glitches were discovered in the rearview camera systems, raising concerns about driver safety. While no accidents or injuries have been reported, experts warn that these issues could increase the risk of collisions while reversing.
The recalls affect a wide range of models, including 2021–2026 Ford Broncos and 2021–2024 Ford Edges, which may experience overheating in an internal component of the infotainment system, causing the rearview camera to shut down entirely. Additionally, some 2020–2022 Ford Escapes and Lincoln Corsairs, as well as 2020–2024 Lincoln Aviators and Explorers, may display a flipped or inverted rearview image, potentially confusing drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these defects could reduce visibility when backing up, a leading factor in low-speed collisions and pedestrian accidents.
Ford has already started addressing the issue for Bronco and Edge owners, offering a free software update for the vehicles’ Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). Updates can be completed at dealerships or via an over-the-air update, and owners will receive notification letters by the end of the month.

For the Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers, a fix is still in development. Interim letters are expected to be mailed to owners in the coming months to raise awareness about the potential safety risks.
Vehicle owners are encouraged to check their VIN numbers through the NHTSA website or Ford’s online recall lookup and to schedule updates as soon as they become available. Ford has also established a customer service line at 1-866-436-7332 to assist owners with questions.
Experts emphasize that even minor software glitches in rearview systems can pose a serious safety risk, particularly in crowded parking lots or residential areas. Drivers are advised to exercise extra caution when reversing until software updates are applied.
