Morehouse breaks ground on two new buildings

Share

Morehouse College is making strides toward modernizing its campus as part of its “Campus of the Future” initiative. The college celebrated its 158th anniversary by breaking ground on two significant construction projects: a new 58,000-square-foot campus center and an 88,000-square-foot residence hall. The new residence hall will offer more than 300 beds for students, and the campus center will provide a modern space for learning and student activities.

The Woodruff Foundation has donated $20 million to support the development of the campus center, which is a central part of the college’s ongoing modernization efforts. Morehouse is also looking to its alumni and broader community for contributions to continue these improvements. College president David A. Thomas emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “We hope that you, our community of support, will continue to invest in building the Campus of the Future at Morehouse.”

The groundbreaking is part of Morehouse’s larger $500 million fundraising campaign, the “Making Men of Consequence” campaign, which began in 2022. So far, the campaign has raised $320 million and is aimed at improving scholarships, academic programs, athletics, faculty research, and campus facilities. Alongside construction projects, Morehouse has already renovated its Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, B.T. Harvey Stadium, and the Edwin C. Moses Track and Field.

In addition to the construction efforts, Morehouse recently announced a $5 million endowed scholarship to support students in business and technology programs who face financial challenges. This scholarship, a donation from retired Walgreens CEO L. Daniel Jorndt, will be a critical resource for students seeking a Morehouse education but struggling with tuition costs.

Morehouse College’s ongoing campaign and construction projects are part of its commitment to providing an environment that fosters academic growth and leadership development for its students.
