40 million gallons of wastewater spills from Cobb County Water System Reclamation Facility into Chattahoochee

Share

The Cobb County Water System (CCWS) has reported a spill from its South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility into the Chattahoochee River. The spill occurred following routine compliance testing on February 12. The testing revealed that the treated wastewater released did not meet the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) standards.

The South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility, which is permitted by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) to treat up to 40 million gallons of wastewater daily, discharged a total of 40.08 million gallons into the Chattahoochee River.

The discharge has been classified as a “spill” under EPD guidelines. CCWS officials have emphasized that the wastewater was disinfected before being released and that the spill will not affect drinking water supplies.CCWS officials say routine water quality testing, conducted both upstream and downstream of the release site, has shown no negative impact on the river’s water quality. As a result, no cleanup or remediation is required.

CCWS employees promptly reported the incident and are continuing daily water quality testing to ensure the safety of the river and drinking water.

The community is waiting for an official investigation and response from EPD.
