Michael Thurmond Launches 2026 Bid for Georgia Governor

Share

Veteran public servant and Democrat Michael Thurmond has officially launched his 2026 campaign for Georgia governor, aiming to become the state’s first Democratic governor in nearly three decades — and the first Black governor in Georgia’s history.

Thurmond, 72, brings a long track record of public leadership and bipartisan bridge-building. “I’m going to fight for the people of Georgia every day,” he said, outlining a campaign focused on real-world concerns like the rising cost of groceries, housing affordability, access to healthcare, and a commitment to ending political divisiveness.

A lifelong Georgian and the son of a sharecropper, Thurmond was the youngest of nine children and has long broken barriers in Georgia politics. He was:

  • The first Black legislator from Athens since Reconstruction (elected in 1986),
  • One of only three Black officials elected statewide in Georgia, serving three terms as labor commissioner (first elected in 1998),
  • A former interim superintendent of DeKalb County Schools, where he helped restore accreditation during a financial and governance crisis,
  • And most recently, the CEO of DeKalb County, where he left the county with a $150 million surplus.

His background in education, workforce development, and fiscal management has already drawn interest from voters looking for seasoned leadership.

“I bring a record of service and accomplishment,” said Thurmond. “I’ve never shied away from taking on tough jobs.”

Thurmond joins a growing Democratic primary field that includes State Sen. Jason Esteves, State Repressentative Derrick Jackson, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and businessman Olu Brown. All have emphasized resisting far-right policies, especially those linked to former President Donald Trump. While Thurmond acknowledges the stakes, his focus remains squarely on Georgians.

“It’s not about fighting Trump,” he said. “I’m going to fight for Georgia residents.”

He says the top priority for Democratic voters is simple: winning. “The number one concern of the Democrats I talk to is that they want a candidate who can win.”

Thurmond believes his experience governing in both local and statewide roles, along with his message of unity, gives him the edge. His campaign seeks to mobilize voters across racial and political lines by appealing to their shared values — something he says he’s done successfully before. “It’s not a hypothetical for me,” he added. “I’ve seen it with my own eyes. I’ve experienced it. And consequently, I come into this race with great faith in this state and the people of Georgia.”

Republican Candidates for Governor include Attorney General Chris Carr and Lt. Gov. Burt Jones.

Gov. Brian Kemp is term-limited and cannot run again, opening the door for what is expected to be a competitive race in a closely watched battleground state.
