Memorial Day is a federal holiday dedicated to honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Observed on May 30 from 1868 to 1970, the holiday has been celebrated on the last Monday of May since 1971.
On this day, people visit cemeteries and memorials to pay respects to fallen military personnel. American flags are placed on the graves of military personnel in national cemeteries, while family and friends lay flowers on the graves of their loved ones who served. Additionally, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer.
Cobb County Memorial Day ceremonies include:
Marietta – Noon at the Marietta National Cemetery 500 Washington Avenue NE, Marietta.
Powder Springs – Noon at the Veteran’s Memorial in front of the Powder Springs Library, 4181 Atlanta Street, Powder Springs.
Smyrna – Ceremony is 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial next to City Hall, 2800 King Street SE, Smyrna.
Acworth – Ceremony is 10 – 11 a.m. at Cauble Park, Patriots Point, 4425 Beach Street, Acworth.
