Cupid and successor Sheffield have not earned your vote for another four years

Share

In 2020, as voters were deciding Cobb’s local runoff race for District 4, then Commissioner Lisa Cupid handpicked her untested friend, Monique Sheffield, to succeed her as she ascended to Chair. Cupid told voters she needed Sheffield by her side in Cobb government, and with Cupid’s endorsement, the untested Sheffield narrowly won the race.

As a result of Cupid’s meddling in that race, Cobb citizens have had a front row seat to the chaos that has ensued with Cupid and her handpicked commissioner. For the past 3 1/2 years, bad decisions after bad decisions have plagued our community thanks to this duo.

Sheffield has shown no independence, consistently supporting every poor decision Cupid has made. Sheffield has provided the second of the three votes Cupid has used to throw the county into disorder. This includes approving construction in the crash zone at Dobbins, against the planning commission’s advice, nearly jeopardizing Cobb’s major economic engine. To mitigate this blunder, they traded 5 acres of taxpayer land on Terrell Mill to the developer. This mess, created by a lawyer (Cupid) and a realtor (Sheffield), could have been avoided by simply following the planning commission’s guidance, but they did not.

This is just one example of the many costly mistakes that have burdened taxpayers. Another is the ongoing legal fees for a map they created in a back room that goes against the legal map of the state, throwing the voting for District 2 into chaos and disenfranchising voters. Closer to home, the two have placed themselves in  jeopardy as some say they have violated their oath to uphold the constitution of Georgia, which includes the map Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law.

Despite claiming successes while in office, Cupid and Sheffield have had far more failures than wins. One significant failure is Magnolia Crossing. For nearly two decades, Cupid and Sheffield have failed to develop 50 acres of prime real estate in South Cobb, leaving the land dormant. The lawyer Cupid and realtor Sheffield have turned their backs on the needs of South Cobb.

Now, Cupid and Sheffield seek four more years to ‘finish their work.’ Many voters question what work they refer to, given their record of divisiveness and fiscal irresponsibility. This is a growing list of costly blunders that have cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Cupid and Sheffield have touted successes, but they are mirages – when you get close enough, they disappear.

Some things that are not mirages are their failure to roll back the millage rate last year, their maneuvering to get a 30-year tax referendum on the November ballot, and their recent insistence on placing a water-sewer tax on Cobb citizens.

Cupid’s 2024 State of the County address, marked by extravagant spending on a costly meal, contrasted sharply with her previous fiery rhetoric in 2023. Cupid’s fire and brimstone state of the county speech in 2023 found Cobb faced with a Mad Chair, someone who had gone off the rails as she mocked her detractors. This year’s speech was meek and mild. Gone were chants of being the first Black Women Chair, which she repeated so many times during the past few years that we have lost count. Instead of ‘letting them eat cake’ Cupid let them eat Crabcakes as she speat $20 to $30 thousand dollars serving a costly meal to less than a hundred citizens who had gathered to hear from her at what some called a campaign rally. Cupid is suffering from a bad case of tone deafness as she continues to spend county funds on frivolous expenses. Her tone-deafness in spending county funds on frivolous expenses highlights a lack of competence and accountability.

On May 21, voters have the chance to hold Cupid and Sheffield accountable for their decisions that have negatively impacted Cobb. After 3 1/2 painful years, it is time to decide: do you want four more years of divisive leadership and poor fiscal management and accountability, or do you want change in Cobb?

Leave your answer at the polls on Tuesday.
