The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII after a stunning overtime touchdown drive to beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22. Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and the Kansas City Chiefs have propelled themselves into the ranks of elite NFL franchises. Following their triumph in Las Vegas, the Chiefs secured their place in history as the seventh team to clinch four Super Bowl victories.
Mahomes masterminded an excellent 14-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in overtime following the 49ers’ field goal to go ahead, culminating in a three-yard pass to receiver Mecole Hardman to clinch the victory. The 28-year-old quarterback was named the Super Bowl 2024 MVP, which marks the third time in Mahomes’ career that he has won the honor.
The win cements the Chiefs’ legacy as the NFL’s next great dynasty, becoming the first back-to-back NFL champions in 19 years and winning its third ring under head coach Andy Reid and with Mahomes as quarterback. With the acquisition of their fourth Lombardi Trophy, the Chiefs stand among the most successful franchises in NFL lore and are in the exclusive company of the New England Patriots (six Super Bowl wins), Pittsburgh Steelers (six), San Francisco 49ers (five), Dallas Cowboys (five), Green Bay Packers (four), and New York Giants (four).
Although the Chiefs claimed Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings under the guidance of Hall of Fame head coach Hank Stram, they endured a 50-year wait before capturing Super Bowl LIV against the 49ers. Remarkably, they have now bested the Niners once again, securing their third Super Bowl title in just five seasons.
The NFL’s grandest stage has witnessed overtime drama only twice in its history, and both instances occurred within the last decade. The first occurrence took place in 2017 during Super Bowl LI, as the New England Patriots mounted a stunning comeback from a 28-3 deficit to triumph over the Atlanta Falcons. Now, a similar thrilling conclusion unfolded in the most recent Super Bowl, marking only the second time in the league’s history that the game extended into overtime.
