On Wednesday, October 16, former President Jimmy Carter, at 100 years old and in hospice care, achieved one of his last wishes by casting an early vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Carter, the longest-living U.S. president, had expressed his desire to vote for Harris before his death, a goal he shared with his grandson, Jason Carter.
Carter’s absentee ballot was dropped off at the Sumter County Courthouse near his hometown of Plains, Georgia, by his daughter-in-law, Becky Carter, wife of Carter’s son, Chip Carter. His son confirmed that the former president “absolutely” voted for Harris, noting that his father has never voted for a Republican.
At 100 years old, Carter has been in hospice care since February 2023. Earlier this year, at the Democratic National Convention, Jason Carter spoke about their family’s support for Harris, saying, “Kamala Harris carries my grandfather’s legacy. She knows what is right, and she fights for it.”
On October 15, the first day of early voting in Georgia, over 250,000 people cast their ballots. Carter would join them the next day, fulfilling a personal milestone just weeks after celebrating his 100th birthday on October 1.
