The Kennesaw State University Police Department has started a GoFundMe campaign to support Lieutenant Robert Milam, a 20-year veteran of the department, after he was severely injured in a house fire on Thursday.
Milam’s home was completely destroyed in the fire, and he suffered serious burns while heroically rescuing his family. He is currently receiving treatment at a burn center and will require surgeries and an extended recovery period, according to the department.
“Lieutenant Milam and his family face a long road in this recovery, and as you can imagine, this will be a very stressful time for them financially,” read a statement from the department on Facebook.
The GoFundMe campaign has set a goal of $60,000 to assist the Milam family with medical expenses and other financial needs. As of Friday afternoon, the campaign had raised $4,340 from 41 donors.
The department described Lt. Milam as an officer who would “give anyone the shirt off his back.” They added, “For this to happen at any time would be difficult, but during this time of year, it only makes things harder. With love and support from the local community, we can help alleviate the financial burden that his family will be facing.”
