The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter, is hosting their 27th Annual Unsung Heroines Awards Gala entitled “Leading Legacy: Shining Bright Through Generations” on Saturday, May 18, 2024.
Among the 2024 honorees are fallen Georgia service members who will be presented the Presidential Award posthumously. They include Sgt. Breonna Moffett, Sgt. Kennedy Sanders, and Staff Sgt. William Rivers. In the wake of a drone attack that took their lives on January 28, the U.S. Army Reserve posthumously promoted Sanders and Moffett from Spc. to the rank of Sergeant, while Sgt. Rivers was promoted to Staff Sergeant.
The three service members were killed in a weekend drone attack at a base in Jordan in January. They were part of the 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion, 926th Engineer Brigade. Each were army reservists based in Georgia. Rivers, 46, was from Carrollton, Sanders, 24, was from Waycross, and Moffett, 23, was from Savannah. Family members of the fallen soldiers will attend the Gala to accept their awards.
As the organization seeks to honor them with the highest award, the Presidential Award, President Belinda Walker expressed her sadness on the loss of life of the three service members saying, “These three fallen heroes represent the best of us. To safeguard our nation, American soldiers, like Sgt. Moffett, Sgt. Sanders, and Staff Sgt. William Rivers, courageously put their lives on the line every day to defend and protect our country. We honor their service and their sacrifice. With honor, we will respectfully present these awards to their families to reaffirm our commitment to always remembering and cherishing their memory.

About the Unsung Heroines Awards Gala
The Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., conceived the Unsung Heroines Awards Gala in 1997 as an opportunity to recognize African American women. The awards are presented to women in our community who work tirelessly to empower their community in vital areas such as education, health, politics, civic responsibility, business, and entertainment. These women labor tirelessly without recognition. The women honored are nominated by their peers and voted on by an independent panel. Proceeds from this event will benefit the organization’s Economic Empowerment Programs, which provide transitional support services to women and children who need a helping hand as they transition from dependency to self-sufficiency.
