Dell McGee has been appointed as the new head football coach for the Georgia State football program, succeeding Shawn Elliott who recently left for South Carolina. McGee, who served as an assistant at the University of Georgia for the past eight seasons, brings a wealth of experience and is widely recognized as a top recruiter.

McGee, 50, played at Auburn and had a seven-year professional career in various football leagues. He began his coaching career in 2002 as the head coach at Carver-Columbus High School. He also served as an assistant coach at Georgia Southern, including a stint as interim coach in 2015, where he led the team to victory in the GoDaddy Bowl. With these experiences under his belt, the Columbus native has extensive ties across the state and has built a successful and respected profile in the coaching community. McGee’s coaching journey includes being one of the original hires to Kirby Smart’s staff at Georgia in 2016. He has been an integral part of the Georgia coaching staff, most recently holding the position of running-game coordinator.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, McGee stated, “I am forever grateful for Coach (Kirby) Smart and the University of Georgia for supporting me in my dream of being a college head coach. Georgia State is primed for success. As a premiere institution in the best city in America, I can’t wait to lead the football program as we compete for championships.”

Charlie Cobb, the Athletic Director at Georgia State, expressed confidence in McGee’s ability to lead the football program, citing his outstanding track record of competitive success at both the high school and college levels.

In terms of compensation, Shawn Elliott earned $811,000 at Georgia State last season. Dell McGee earned $850,000 at Georgia last season. Although his salary for this new position has not yet been announced, reports are that McGee and Georgia State are in the process of finalizing a five-year deal.
