Lance Lamberton, an opponent of Cobb County’s transit referendum, has filed an ethics complaint against Chairwoman Lisa Cupid, alleging she has violated state law by displaying “obvious bias” in favor of the ballot question. Lamberton, the founder of the Cobb Taxpayers Association, asserts that Cupid, in her role as chairwoman, is responsible for ensuring that public funds are not utilized to advocate for the referendum.
Said Lamberton in his complaint, “There can be no doubt that the content of the videos and printed material clearly and indisputably advocate in favor of the M-SPLOST’s passage.”
The referendum proposes a substantial $30 billion fund for transit and related projects. Lamberton has cited promotional materials from the county, which he believes clearly support the initiative’s approval, including a flier that claims the initiative will enhance transit infrastructure with an emphasis on safety and reliability for the community.
Following the recusal of the board’s regular counsel on Wednesday, Marietta attorney Darrell Sutton has been appointed to investigate the complaint.
The Cobb Board of Ethics has 60 days in which to hold a hearing on Lambeton’s complaint.
