Members of the metro community witnessed the incredible footage of the recent storm that swept through Atlanta.
The campus of Clark Atlanta University, the private, historically Black university located on Atlanta’s Westside, was hard hit as it found itself besieged within minutes with unprecedented flooding that impacted student housing buildings.
Several cars were also damaged or destroyed in the flash flooding. One witness said the water rose so high the cars were submerged and floating around the street.
In response to the impact the flooding caused at CAU, the Atlanta community has expressed a desire to help the students who were affected. CAU has provided a suggestion for those who wish to assist.
CAU officials are recommending that donations be directed through its “Student Emergency Fund” which is set up to receive both one-time and monthly gifts. The contributions can make a significant difference in assisting the students who were impacted by this unfortunate event.
The severe storms that occurred resulted in significant damage to CAU’s Holmes Hall which included walls being torn apart and rooms being damaged.
Approximately two dozen students were displaced. According to officials, the flooding also caused minor damage at nearby Spelman College.
In a statement after the flooding, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said preliminary rain gauge estimates showed three hours’ worth of rain fell within 15 minutes in some areas of downtown.
Storms experts say storms like these are why cities need to be prepared for more intense deluges. Mayor Dickens has taken action by requesting an evaluation of the city’s sewer grid by the Watershed Management Department to enhance the city’s preparedness and resilience in the face of future weather events, as well as to mitigate potential damage and disruptions.
Clark Atlanta University has an estimated student population of around 4,000.
