After a Saturday morning arrest, the Mayor of the City of South Fulton finds himself facing felony charges of criminal trespass and first-degree burglary.
According to the police report, on Friday, Kamau was seen walking on private property at a home on Cascade Palmetto Highway. The homeowner said he got an alert on his phone from his surveillance cameras, came out to investigate, saw Kamau in his home, and called 911 that someone was in his property uninvited.
According to the police report, Kamau told police he was on his way to the dog park when he decided to stop and look at the house on Cascade Palmetto Highway because it was his dream home and that he wanted to purchase the property. He was not arrested the day of the incident, but was arrested the following day.
Kamau admitted to police that he knew he was trespassing on the homeowner’s property. He told police that when he was walking out of the lake house, the homeowner stated, “No motherf***ker, you stay right there.”As news broke of his arrest, City of South Fulton officials confirmed for the media that Mayor Khalid Kamau was taken into custody.
The City of South Fulton says District-6 Natasha Williams will step in as interim Mayor.
According to Fulton County Jail records, Mayor Kamau was booked into the jail around 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon and released from custody around 8 p.m. after being granted an $11,000 bond. The police report says Kamau was ordered to undergo a psych evaluation.
The City of South Fulton officials released a statement on Saturday morning saying, “The City of South Fulton is committed to upholding the law and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their position, are subject to the same fair and just treatment. As the investigation is still ongoing, we are unable to provide further details at this time.”
After his release, Kamau told reporters, “I do want to thank the South Fulton police and the staff of officers for their courteous and professional service throughout the day”. Kamau said, “I just wanted to see the house. I thought it was abandoned.”
Since being elected to office in 2021, Mayor Kamau has been involved in a number of other controversies. In April, he accused the City of South Fulton of retaliation after an Easter Egg Hunt he sponsored was shut down.
In that kerfuffle, the City said the mayor did not submit the proper paperwork and the unsanctioned event was canceled, but Kamau said he followed the appropriate protocols. In March, members of the South Fulton City Council filed a lawsuit against Kamau, accusing him of violating the city charter by leaking confidential information to the public.
Citizens of South Fulton are unhappy hearing the latest edition of bad news which they say is a bad sign and taints the city.
Michele Wright told a media outlet, “You don’t want your mayor to be known as the mayor who is behind bars for burglary and trespassing, that’s kind of embarrassing to the city and it’s a new city.” Others are divided. They support Kamau and want to wait for all of the information to come out before condemning the Mayor.
