Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a cornerstone of Acworth’s African-American history and community, was honored recently with a plaque deduction.
On November 10, Mayor Tommy Allegood and city staff, along with the Acworth Business Association, celebrated the historic church with a plaque dedication.
Designated a local historic landmark in October 1998, the church was established in 1863 and the building later built by freed slaves in 1878. The bell tower was added in 1895.
Bethel A.M.E Church holds a significant place in both local and national history. In 2002, the church was listed on the U.S. Department of Interior’s National Register of Historic Places.
