Attorney Yashica Marshall Announces Candidacy for Cobb County Commissioner District 4 in February 2025 Race

Yashica Marshall has officially announced her candidacy for Cobb County Commissioner in District 4, entering the race for the special election scheduled for February 2025. This election comes in the wake of a court ruling that invalidated the controversial “Cupid Map,” implemented by Cobb County Chair Lisa Cupid and supported by two other members of the Board of Commissioners, including the current seat holder whom Yashica is challenging.
The map, which conflicted with one drawn by the state legislature, was deemed illegal after it was used earlier this year to disqualify potential candidates based on residency within its boundaries. The court’s decision highlighted the overreach by Cupid and her allies, who disregarded state law and the Georgia Constitution, which places redistricting authority with the legislature—not county governments.
The fallout from the illegal map has cost taxpayers millions of dollars in legal defense fees after the map was challenged by a citizen negatively impacted by the redistricting. Additionally, taxpayers are now burdened with the expense of a special election to correct the violations. Marshall has vowed to bring integrity, fiscal responsibility, and fair representation back to District 4, offering voters a clear alternative to the mismanagement of recent years.
The legal challenge to the Cupid Map resulted in a judge’s decision requiring new elections for Districts 2 and 4. Marshall, who resides in District 4 with her husband, has emphasized her readiness to serve the community and bring accountability to the commission. Her candidacy is expected to focus on restoring trust and ensuring fair representation for Cobb County residents. A longtime Cobb County resident and experienced attorney, Marshall is stepping into the race with a focus on addressing pressing local issues such as infrastructure challenges, housing affordability, and property tax reform. Highlighting her commitment to community-driven solutions, Marshall emphasized her track record of public service and her vision to prioritize the needs of residents over political self-interest.
“My candidacy is about offering the people of District 4 a real choice—one rooted in accountability, transparency, and a dedication to making our communities better,” Marshall said. “It’s time to focus on solutions that matter to everyday families and ensure Cobb County remains a place we are proud to call home.”
A Democrat, Marshall’s platform will emphasize maintaining Cobb’s suburban quality of life, tackling neglected issues like flooding and overinflated property assessments, and resisting burdensome tax increases and fees.
Marshall’s candidacy reflects a continued desire from citizens with an energized demand for better leadership across Georgia. Communities are seeking representatives who are both responsive to local challenges and forward-thinking in their approach.
Yashica’s Statement:
“Having called Cobb County home for over a decade, my family and I have experienced moments of historic progress – but that progress has been overshadowed by the ongoing poor decision-making of our current Board of Commissioners.
This negative reality has inspired me to step forward and offer the people of District 4 a real choice for leadership—a choice rooted in integrity, transparency, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our community.
My diverse professional background uniquely equips me to tackle the challenges our district and our county faces. From my work as a substance abuse counselor and hospital director to serving as a compliance director in corporate America, and now as the Privacy Officer and Associate General Counsel for a state agency, my career reflects a lifetime of dedication to serving people and solving complex problems.
I understand the pressing issues that have been neglected by the current administration:
- Poor infrastructure leading to frequent flooding.
- A lack of affordable housing solutions for essential workers.
- Overinflated property assessments resulting in higher taxes for residents.
Instead of addressing these concerns that impact your family and mine, the Board has focused on frivolous litigation, failed referendums, and self-serving actions. As your next District 4 Commissioner, I will prioritize solutions that protect your economic well-being, address long-neglected issues, and preserve the safe, peaceful suburban lifestyle that defines Cobb County—a community we all cherish.
I come from a proud family with a long tradition of military service. My grandfather, an Army veteran, was awarded a Purple Heart, and both my father and sister also served in the Army. Additionally, my aunt and her husband recently retired from the Navy after more than 40 years of service. These values of dedication, discipline, and service have guided me throughout my life.
Building on my family’s legacy, I have earned multiple degrees (JD, MS, BS) and combined my education with a strong commitment to community leadership. As an entrepreneur, I own a sports league, and as a community advocate, I serve on the board of directors for a nonprofit organization.
This blend of personal, professional, and civic experience fuels my passion for public service. Together, with your support and your vote, we can ensure that Cobb County remains a thriving, vibrant community for generations to come.
My message to the citizens of Cobb County is clear: It’s time to move beyond the harmful decisions and negative policies of the past four years. If you share my belief that our district and county deserve better, I invite you to join my campaign for change. Go to my website to learn more about me and how you can help. Together, we can create a brighter future for District 4 and all of the citizens of Cobb County.”
