Atlanta City Council Outlines Process to Fill Vacant District 2 Seat by August 27

The Atlanta City Council has officially announced the process to fill the soon-to-be-vacant District 2 Council seat, following the upcoming resignation of Councilmember Amir Farokhi, effective August 23, 2025.
According to Section 5-103(a)(3) of the City of Atlanta Charter, if a regular election for a Council position is scheduled within a year of a vacancy, the Council may appoint a qualified person—by majority vote—to serve the remainder of the term within 30 days of the vacancy.
The appointed individual will represent District 2 through January 5, 2026, when the winner of the November 2025 municipal general election will take office.
Candidate Qualifications
To be considered for appointment, applicants must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Be a resident of the City of Atlanta and District 2 for at least one year prior to application
- Be a registered voter in the city
- Not be an employee of the City of Atlanta
Starting Friday, August 8, interested individuals must submit:
- A resume
- A statement of interest
Submissions are due by Wednesday, August 27 at 5:00 p.m. and can be delivered:
- In person to the Office of the Municipal Clerk at Atlanta City Hall (55 Trinity Avenue SW, 2nd floor)
- By email: municipalclerk@atlantaga.gov
- Online: citycouncil.atlantaga.gov
The Office of the Municipal Clerk will forward qualified applications to the Committee on Council, which will present the candidates during the September 2 City Council meeting. Submissions, along with any additional nominees, will be reviewed for consideration, with a final Council vote scheduled for September 15.Applicants who fail to meet the minimum qualifications will be disqualified.
