And Another One… Gallons of Sewage Overflow in Cobb

Share

Cobb County is once again facing a sewage spill, with the latest incident impacting Sope Creek in Marietta. The Cobb County Water System reported a 5,400-gallon wastewater sewer overflow on December 12, caused by grease buildup at 203 Lakeshore Drive. The spill discharged into a tributary of Sope Creek.

The Water System was notified of the overflow at 10:45 a.m. on December 12, and crews were able to stop the discharge by 12:15 p.m. Upon investigation, crews discovered sewage flowing from a six-inch cleanout that had its lid removed, spilling downhill into the waterway. The affected area measured approximately 50 feet by 20 feet, and the water was gray in color.

Citizens continue to voice concern about the growing number of sewage spills across Cobb County. While each spill may seem like an isolated incident, collectively, they suggest a deeper, more systemic issue. The frequency and scale of these spills raise significant questions about the state of the county’s infrastructure, maintenance practices, and waste management systems. As these incidents continue to affect the environment and public health, residents are demanding more transparency and proactive measures to address the root causes and prevent future occurrences. The growing frustration highlights the need for urgent action to resolve this ongoing problem.

To address the situation, crews used a jet machine to clear the blockage, followed by the application of lime and enzymes to minimize environmental impact. For more information, residents can contact the Cobb County Water System’s Maintenance Division at 770-419-6351.
