A key ingredient that gives homemade soups their comforting taste on a cold winter’s day has been recalled from Walmarts in over a half-dozen states due to defective packaging that could lead to spoilage.
Around 12,000 units of Great Value chicken broth, a Walmart store-brand base commonly used in soups and other meals, were recalled starting in December. The recall was officially announced in an advisory published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on January 8, 2025.
The issue lies with the packaging, which was found to be defective, making the product prone to spoilage. This could pose a potential risk of foodborne illness for consumers who use the broth past its intended shelf life.
The recall affects multiple states, with Walmart locations likely to be involved in areas where the affected product was sold. Consumers are advised to check their pantries and return the affected products to Walmart for a refund or exchange.
Those who have purchased the recalled Great Value chicken broth are encouraged to stop using it immediately and contact Walmart for further instructions on returns. For additional information, consumers can visit the FDA’s official website for more details on the recall and to check if their purchased products are included.
