Two Democratic State Representatives Resign Ahead of 2026 Legislative Session

Atlanta, GA – Two Democratic members of the Georgia House of Representatives have resigned ahead of the start of the 2026 legislative session, creating vacancies just days before lawmakers are set to return to the Capitol.

State Rep. Karen Bennett (D–Stone Mountain) stepped down Jan. 1 after 13 years of service in the Georgia Legislature, according to a resignation letter. Bennett, who has represented her DeKalb County district since 2013, was a longtime fixture under the Gold Dome through multiple legislative cycles and administrations. Her resignation comes as the General Assembly prepares to convene next week, temporarily reducing Democratic representation in the House until a special election is held.

In a separate announcement, State Rep. Lynn Heffner (D–Augusta) resigned from the House effective immediately, citing residency issues caused by severe damage to her home during Hurricane Helene. Heffner, who was elected in 2022 and represented House District 130, said prolonged uncertainty surrounding the rebuilding of her residence made it increasingly difficult to meet the legal residency requirements tied to her legislative seat. Her home sustained significant structural damage during the storm, and delays in the rebuilding process have left her housing situation unresolved.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of House District 130, which has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Heffner said in a statement. However, she acknowledged that continued debate and uncertainty over the rebuilding process ultimately led to her decision to step aside, saying the situation had “reached an impasse.” Despite her resignation, Heffner said her work in public service will continue, particularly on behalf of military families, veterans, seniors, and underserved communities.

Both departures will require special elections to fill the vacant seats. House leadership has not yet announced timelines for those elections. The resignations come at a pivotal moment as the General Assembly prepares to tackle major policy debates during the upcoming session.
