Trump Revokes Secret Service Protection for Kamala Harris, Endangering Public Safety

Share

Former President Donald Trump has abruptly revoked Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, a move critics say not only threatens her safety but also endangers the public at her upcoming events.

By law, former vice presidents receive six months of federal protection, which Harris’ coverage expired on July 21, 2025. President Joe Biden had privately extended that protection for an additional year, recognizing persistent security threats. Trump’s September 1 memorandum instantly ended that extension, leaving Harris without federal security just weeks before her multi-city book tour promoting 107 Days.

Critics note that Trump has previously terminated security details for other former officials and political opponents, including Hunter and Ashley Biden, former National Security Advisor John Bolton, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Observers argue this pattern points to politically motivated decisions rather than safety considerations.

Security experts warn that removing federal protection creates risks for the public at tour events. Without Secret Service oversight, venues may struggle to control crowds, prevent incidents, and respond to threats—potentially putting fans, staff, and attendees in harm’s way.

Democratic leaders decried the move as retaliatory. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called it “an act of revenge” that “could put Vice President Harris and the public at serious risk.” A spokesperson for California Governor Gavin Newsom added, “The safety of public officials and the citizens they interact with should never be left to political whims.”

Harris’ team praised the professionalism of the Secret Service but now must rely on state and local authorities to secure her tour—raising logistical challenges and safety concerns for events that were planned with federal security in mind.

“This isn’t just about a former vice president—it’s about public safety,” said a security analyst. “Politically motivated actions like this put lives at risk.”

Harris’ book tour begins later this month, under heightened uncertainty and potential risk due to the abrupt withdrawal of federal protection.
