A high-stakes SWAT operation shook a typically quiet Cobb County neighborhood Thursday night, ending with four suspects in custody, a major drug seizure, and — despite a gunfire exchange — no reported injuries.
The incident took place on Eugenia Place, off Austell Powder Springs Road, when the Marietta-Cobb-Smyrna (MCS) Narcotics Unit attempted to serve a search warrant as part of an ongoing drug investigation.

According to authorities, 36-year-old Jose Vidali Cruz-Azanza opened fire on officers before retreating into the home. Law enforcement returned fire but no one was struck. After a tense standoff lasting several hours, SWAT officers entered the residence and took Cruz-Azanza into custody.
Also Arrested:
- Yosili Lurisa Diaz, 32
- Naymar Ventura Hererra, 22
- Jose Resendez Zurita, 40
Items Seized from the Home:
- 8.55 kg of methamphetamine
- 1.7 grams of cocaine
- 5 grams of marijuana
- Four firearms
All four suspects are charged with trafficking methamphetamine, possession of cocaine, and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. Cruz-Azanza faces additional charges of three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm during a felony. Diaz and Zurita also face misdemeanor obstruction charges.
“I am thankful no deputies or officers were injured while removing this lethal amount of meth from our community,” said Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens. “If you traffic drugs into Cobb County, our MCS unit will find you, and you will face justice.”
The MCS Narcotics Unit is a multi-agency task force within the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. It includes officers from Acworth, Austell, Cobb County, Kennesaw, Marietta, and Smyrna police departments.
Residents said the home had been a troubling presence for months, with frequent traffic and suspicious activity. “Cars came in and out constantly. They were loud and evasive if you tried to speak to them,” said one neighbor. Despite the standoff, neighbors emphasized that the area is normally peaceful and closely connected. “This kind of thing isn’t something we ever expected to happen on our street,” one resident said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken over the case, as is standard protocol in any officer-involved shooting.
