Cobb County police confirmed that the student who suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Lindley Middle School a week prior has died. On the day of the incident, Cobb Police and Cobb County Schools Police responded to the school along Veterans Memorial Highway. The student was airlifted to the hospital where she was in critical condition for days after the shooting. After getting the code red alert just before 3 p.m. School officers and Cobb police searched the school and found the 12-year-old female student injured in the bathroom. Law enforcement quickly secured the weapon and determined there was no threat to other students or staff. At this time, police are not releasing the name of the child.
Officials do not know how she got the gun into the school and declined to say what kind of weapon was used. Parents and students were shaken following the news with many calls for stronger security and mental health resources in schools. School officials said counseling services would be made available to students and staff.
In a note to parents, Lindley officials said, “We also encourage families to take this time to check in with their children and discuss their thoughts and feelings. Open communication at home, along with the resources we provide at school, can make a significant difference in helping students navigate challenging emotions.”
This is but the latest in a disturbing trend of students bringing weapons on campus in the metro Atlanta area.
