Stacey Abrams, Brian Kemp, David Perdue and others on the ballot as a week of qualifying comes to an end
Share
This is the moment everyone has been waiting for, the rematch between Stacey Abrams and Brian Kemp for Governor of Georgia. Both qualified this week and should be at the top of their party’s ticket in the general election in November, however, Kemp has some homework to do in the primary as he has a challenger.
Kemp, who barely won the governorship in his first match with Abrams in 2018, is finding the road to his party’s nomination a little bumpy, thanks to a former friend, now foe, David Perdue. Perdue is running with the backing of former President Donald Trump, who promised to punish several Republicans, including Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for their refusal to overturn the 2020 presidential elections in his favor.
As for Abrams, she has spent her time since her first race with Kemp building her brand, building relationships, and building her war chest. She has no primary opponent. Political pundits say Abrams will spend her time wisely preparing for the general election.
Qualifying for Georgia’s 2022 elections ended Friday afternoon, in addition to Abrams, Kemp, and Perdue, there is a long list of incumbents and newcomers who are already off to the races, so to speak, in their efforts to secure the winner’s slot in the primary.
Another race to watch will be the U.S. Senate race. Incumbent Raphael Warnock, D-Georgia, will face a wide slate of challengers including Herschel Walker and Ag Secretary Gary Black, among others. While Black and other Republican candidates are demanding that Herschel agrees to debates, Walker has refused and made it clear that he will only debate Warnock. The article in the Sunday copy of the AJC on Herschel, his business dealing, and partners has provided a litany of topics to talk about.
Cobb County will see itself represented by four members of the U.S. House of Representatives after new congressional district boundaries were approved earlier this year. Democrat Lucy McBath, who represents the 6th Congressional District, is running for the neighboring 7th District against fellow Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux and Donna McLeod, leaving the now Republican-leaning seat she has occupied open.
U.S. Rep. David Scott, D-Atlanta, who represents the 13th District, picked up challengers – two Democrats and two Republicans. Former state Sen. Vincent Fort is among the contenders.
U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, who represents the 11th District, is being challenged by Antonio Daza, a Democratic businessman.
U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Rome, who represents a portion of southwest Cobb, faces nine challengers.
Cobb Board of Commissioner Keli Gambrill does not have a challenger, while fellow Commissioner JoAnn Birrell faces primary and general election challengers in Republican Judy Sarden and Democrat Christine Triebsch.
