South Fulton Residents Voice Opposition to Proposed Millage Rate Increase

Share

City leaders in South Fulton hosted a town hall meeting to provide information and answer questions about the more than $100 million public safety facilities planned for the city, including a new fire training site on Cascade Palmetto Road and a police headquarters on Old National Highway.

While residents support the new facilities, many strongly oppose proposals to raise or eliminate the city’s charter millage rate cap. The projects, partially funded through debt financing, are on land purchased in 2022.

“I am a qualified voter of the city. This room is full of other qualified voters in the city, and we want to be heard. I feel like my voice is being silenced,” said Wanda Mosley.

Reyshard Snelling added, “The cap is a protection given to property owners by the state. Asking us to strip it is not an investment that will yield a profit.”

City leaders insist the proposals comply with the law and would not raise property taxes. Council member Helen Willis said, “We are not doing anything illegal. We’re simply trying to put ourselves in the best position for debt financing to help our public safety officers help us.”

The South Fulton City Council is scheduled to vote on potential changes to the charter millage rate cap on Tuesday, September 9.
