HENRY COUNTY, GA — Legendary basketball player Shaquille O’Neal has been promoted to Chief of Community Relations for the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, effective Christmas Day. The promotion was announced by Sheriff Reginald B. Scandrett, who credited O’Neal with advancing a nationally recognized model of community engagement, trust-building, and service.

O’Neal previously served as Director of Community Relations for the past five years, a role in which he led hundreds of community events and oversaw the distribution of tens of thousands of meals, toys, and gifts to local families. The Sheriff’s Office says his efforts have resulted in tens of thousands of documented interactions between law enforcement and residents, strengthening relationships and fostering public trust.

“Public safety begins with public trust,” Sheriff Scandrett said. “Shaq’s leadership and visibility in the community are a model for how law enforcement can engage with residents in meaningful ways.”

O’Neal’s connection to the Atlanta area extends beyond basketball. He owns multiple Papa John’s and Krispy Kreme franchises, several homes in the McDonough area, and has been deeply involved in local philanthropy. Notable acts of community service include:

  • Delivering Christmas presents to hundreds of children at Fairview Elementary School.
  • Donating hundreds of pairs of new shoes to elementary school students.
  • Providing Thanksgiving meals to hundreds of families.
  • Awarding grants to local high school athletes.
  • Offering a $30,000 reward during a manhunt for a suspect accused of shooting a Georgia police officer.
  • Assisting a North Carolina family after a tragic house fire in September.

O’Neal’s promotion reflects the Sheriff’s Office emphasis on consistent engagement between deputies and the community as a critical element of crime prevention and cooperation.

As Chief of Community Relations, O’Neal will expand his role in community outreach, youth engagement, and public safety initiatives, helping the department maintain strong connections with residents throughout Henry County.

“Shaq has proven that leadership is not just about authority—it’s about presence, empathy, and action,” said a department spokesperson. “We are proud to elevate him to this role as we continue to strengthen bonds between law enforcement and the community.”

The promotion is a homegrown honor for O’Neal, who has long maintained deep ties to Georgia and continues to use his platform to make a tangible difference in the lives of local residents.
