In just two years, Sonic Edge A Cappella has made an impressive mark on the music scene. Comprising 16 members from Cobb County Center for Excellence in Performing Arts at Pebblebrook High School, including sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the group achieved something extraordinary in their second year—they clinched the title of national champions at the renowned International Championship of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) in New York.
Despite facing adversity and lacking experience—having not competed in the previous year’s event—Sonic Edge soared to victory, outscoring the second-place team by over 100 points. Adding to Sonic Edge’s win were Sydney Gruver and Amber Lowe, who were honored with Outstanding Soloist and Outstanding Vocal Percussion awards, respectively, for their remarkable performances at the Town Hall Theater in Times Square.
Facing challenges and doubts, Sonic Edge demonstrated resilience and determination throughout their journey. Claire Gunderson, a graduating senior and the group’s music arranger, likened their experience to a movie, recounting moments of uncertainty and triumph.
After initially finishing third in the semifinals and securing a wild card spot, Sonic Edge rallied for the finals in New York. Trey Giddens, the faculty director, offered words of encouragement to the group, emphasizing the importance of giving their all on stage.
Sydney Gruver, hailed as the top soloist in the country, recalled the intense emotions during the final performance. Holding hands with teammates, they embraced the moment, knowing they had poured their hearts into their performance. Their dedication and perseverance paid off when they were announced as the winners, exemplifing the power of passion, teamwork, and unwavering determination.
