Cobb County Manager Jackie McMorris recently announced the appointment of Michael Cunningham as the new fire chief for Cobb County. The appointment was approved with a unanimous 4-0 vote by the board.
Cunningham has been with Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services since 2005, steadily rising through the ranks to division chief before serving as chief of staff. He takes over for former Chief Bill Johnson, who retired last year. Following Johnson’s departure, McMorris initiated a search process before recommending Cunningham for the role.
While Johnson’s annual salary was approximately $205,500, Cunningham’s compensation will be around $195,000, which is $10,000 less.
McMorris praised Cunningham’s extensive background, noting his leadership and representation of Cobb County as a speaker, expert, and facilitator at numerous conferences. Cunningham is also recognized for his experience as an instructor and author.
“It is a humbling experience and an absolute honor to be standing before you,” Cunningham said shortly after the board confirmed his appointment. “To the men and women of this department, I am truly honored to stand alongside you and uphold our tradition of excellence in service to this community. I’m excited about the future.”
Cunningham holds a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, a Master’s in Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics, and an Associate in Applied Science in Avionic Systems Technology. He is also a proud U.S. Air Force veteran.
Cunningham’s appointment officially begins on February 17.
