Meet the Candidate – Sonya Allen for Cobb County District Attorney

Spotlight is continuing its voter education and advocacy during this election cycle by highlighting candidates running for various offices in Cobb County. Today’s Spotlight is on Sonya Allen, candidate for Cobb County District Attorney.

Meet Sonya, a dedicated public servant and seasoned attorney deeply rooted in Cobb County. With a career spanning over three decades, Sonya brings a wealth of experience and a passion for justice to her candidacy for Cobb County District Attorney.

Sonya announced her candidacy for Cobb County District Attorney in August 2023 and has been working to secure the position. She has honed her skills in handling high-profile criminal cases, evaluating evidence for prosecution, and serving as legal counsel.

Having served as Deputy District Attorney with the Fulton County District Attorney’s Anti-Corruption Division and as a veteran of the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, Sonya says she has a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system. Her commitment to transparency, efficiency, and fair prosecution forms the foundation of her campaign. Said this first-time candidate, “I have had the honor of working for the people of Cobb County for almost my entire. I have seen the criminal justice system from every angle over the last 30 years, and I know that we have a lot of work to do to make our streets safer and our system more fair.”

As Cobb’s next District Attorney, Sonya says she will  get violent criminals out of our communities and clear our case backlog while offering unprecedented levels of transparency. During her 30-year esteemed career, she displayed her ability to quickly master the nuances of the many different and diverse areas of one of Georgia’s largest agencies. Sonya has shattered barriers, becoming the first and highest-ranking African American in Cobb County law enforcement history.

Sonya’s campaign is built on five pillars: Transparency and Accountability, Efficiency, Prosecuting Without Fear or Favor, Smart Crime Reduction, and Representation. With her deep devotion to Cobb County, track record of public service, and extensive legal expertise, Sonya is determined to create a safer and more just Cobb County for all its residents as rhe next District Attorney.

Sonya  is not only a committed public servant and fearless advocate for justice but also a proud mother with deep roots in Cobb County. A graduate of the University of West Georgia and John Marshall Law School, Sonya has received numerous accolades, including the Medal of Distinction and the Law and Justice Woman of the Year award. She is actively involved in her community, serving as a gymnastics judge for the Georgia High School Association-Varsity Sports and participating in various local volunteer programs. Sonya is also an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, embodying the values of service and leadership in all aspects of her life.

The Democratic Primary Election will be held on May 21, 2024, with early voting starting on April 29th.

Voters are encouraged to evaluate the platforms and qualifications of each candidate to make an informed decision on Election Day.
