Measles Case Reported in Atlanta

Share

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed a seventh case of measles in the state this year, involving an unvaccinated Georgia State University student. Health officials say the student was infectious between September 2–11 and spent time on campus, at Inter Atlanta FC soccer practices and games, and at the Sweetgreen restaurant at Ponce City Market.

DPH warns that people at these locations during those dates may have been exposed. Measles is highly contagious and can linger in the air for up to two hours. Nine out of ten unvaccinated individuals exposed are likely to become infected.

The agency is working with the Fulton County Board of Health, GSU, and community partners to notify individuals at risk, conduct screenings, and carry out contact tracing. Students at GSU are required to be vaccinated but may request exemptions for religious reasons.

Georgia has reported seven measles cases so far this year, following two family-related outbreaks earlier in January and May. Health officials urge anyone who may have been exposed to monitor for symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, and rash, and to contact a healthcare provider if they develop signs of illness.
