MARTA Unveils Special Bus in Honor of Congressman John Lewis and Lillian Miles Lewis

In a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of the late Congressman John Lewis and his wife Lillian Miles Lewis, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) and the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation held a special bus unveiling and voter registration drive at College Park Station.

The newly unveiled bus, wrapped in a commemorative design, stands as a lasting homage to Congressman Lewis’ extraordinary courage and unwavering commitment to the cause of equality. Known for his pivotal role as one of the original Freedom Riders and a tireless advocate for voting rights, Lewis’ impact on the community and the nation remains profound. His contributions to civil rights were pivotal, notably during the 1965 voter registration efforts in Selma and his presence at the signing of the Voting Rights Act by President Lyndon Johnson.

Throughout his life, Lewis championed voting rights, and his dedication continued throughout his political career until his passing in 2020. The event at College Park Station highlighted both his and his wife’s contributions to public transportation and civil rights. As long-time leaders and activists in Atlanta, the Lewises recognized the importance of MARTA in fostering opportunities for all. Congressman Lewis once remarked on MARTA’s 30th anniversary, “MARTA is a shining example of what can be done. We wouldn’t be the capital of the American South if we had not had MARTA.”
