Man killed by police in Mableton shootout ID’d

Tavis Latimore Carithers, 23, was identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as the man who was shot and killed by police Thursday night in Mableton. Carithers was shot and killed by police after firing at officers from his garage, according to the GBI.
The Cobb County Police Department responded to 4470 Hicks Road in Mableton around 8:30 p.m. after they received a call about a suicidal man with a gun. When they arrived on the scene, police were told that Carithers had shot at family members with a gun. Officers sought to speak with Carithers, but at some point, he began shooting at police and retreated into the house. As Police continued to call Carithers out of the home, he stepped into the garage and fired his gun at officers, said the GBI. Officers returned fire, hitting Carithers. He died at the scene.
An independent investigation is being conducted by the GBI into the shooting. Once complete, a report will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
