In Response for Stronger Oversight, South Fulton Taps Cedric Alexander as Interim Public Safety Director

Share

South Fulton leaders have turned to one of the nation’s most experienced law enforcement officials to help guide the city’s public safety strategy. Dr. Cedric Alexander has been named interim managing director of public safety, a role that gives him oversight of both the police and fire departments.

Alexander’s résumé spans more than four decades in senior-level law enforcement and public service. He has led agencies in DeKalb County, Leon County, Miami-Dade, and Minneapolis; served as police chief in Rochester, New York; and worked as a federal security director with the Transportation Security Administration. On the national stage, he served on the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing and is a past president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

The appointment comes as South Fulton continues to grapple with rapid growth, concerns about crime, and calls from residents for greater accountability. In recent years, the city has undergone several leadership changes within its police department, creating uncertainty around priorities and staffing. Officials say Alexander’s appointment is intended to bring stability and credibility, unify oversight of police and fire operations, and ensure public safety policies reflect best practices.

Beyond his administrative experience, Alexander has been a national voice on policing reform. Holding a doctorate in clinical psychology, he has advocated for stronger mental health crisis response and the integration of evidence-based practices into public safety.

Alexander has often argued that modern policing must combine community trust with innovative tools, not rely solely on traditional enforcement.

“We’re committed to enhancing community engagement, building trust, and leveraging innovative technology to help keep South Fulton residents safe,” Alexander said. “At the end of the day, public safety is about protecting people.”

City officials did not specify how long Alexander will serve in the interim role but emphasized that his appointment is part of a broader push to strengthen South Fulton’s public safety infrastructure and rebuild public confidence.
