Hall County Sheriff Arrested on DUI Charges

Share

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Gerald Jay Couch, 63, the sheriff of Hall County, was arrested on Feb. 27 on charges of driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, and possession of an open container, according to Hall County jail records.

The incident unfolded around 10:30 a.m. on Green Hill Road, when a Hall County sheriff’s deputy operating an unmarked vehicle noticed a black Chevrolet Tahoe swerving across lanes. The deputy reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol from the driver and signs of impairment.

Because the driver was the county sheriff, the deputy called in the Georgia State Patrol to take over the DUI investigation. The state patrol arrested Couch and transported him to the Hall County Jail, where he was booked and later released on a $1,560 bond at approximately 6 p.m. the same day.

The county-issued SUV Couch was driving was impounded by the sheriff’s office following the arrest. “This is an unusual situation, and we are cooperating fully with state authorities as the legal process proceeds,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson said.

The arrest has sparked local attention, as Couch is the county’s top law enforcement official. State authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and any questions regarding the charges should be directed to the Georgia State Patrol.

This marks a rare instance of a sitting sheriff facing DUI charges, highlighting ongoing concerns about accountability for public officials.
