Tragedy struck on Sunday morning in downtown Atlanta as Jason Ogbomoh, a Marietta Middle School teacher, was fatally shot. Authorities said Ogbomoh, 25, lost his life in a shooting incident on the 80 block of Peachtree Street.

At around 3:04 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a reported shooting and found a man, later identified as Ogbomoh. The Acworth man had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Ogbomoh was transported to the hospital in critical condition, according to the Atlanta Police Department, but succumbed to his injuries.

The incident unfolded less than a block away from Underground Atlanta and the Five Points MARTA station. Investigations reveal that the shooting erupted from an escalating dispute, leading to gunfire. The perpetrator fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.

Principal Diona Brown of Marietta Middle School delivered the heartbreaking news of Ogbomoh’s passing in an email to Marietta families on Sunday. Brown expressed her sorrow, stating, “I’m heartbroken to write to you tonight to share that MMS has experienced a profound loss. Mr. Jason Ogbomoh, a beloved teacher at MMS, passed away last night.”

Ogbomoh, who taught computer science at MMS for two years, left a lasting impact as more than just a teacher. Described by his principal as a role model, mentor, and source of inspiration, Ogbomoh’s presence was truly special. Brown emphasized, “His ability to connect with students and his enthusiasm for teaching was truly special. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

A graduate of the University of Georgia in 2020 with a major in biology and a concentration in neuroscience, Ogbomoh was also pursuing a master’s degree in computer science from Georgia State University.

In the wake of this tragic event, school officials are providing counseling and district support for both students and administration to aid in coping with the loss. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and the community mourns the untimely passing of a cherished educator.
