Dr. Mel Pender, Olympic gold medalist, world record holder, Hall of Famer, Vietnam veteran, and longtime Cobb County resident, will celebrate his 88th birthday this October with a renewed commitment to the next generation. Mel is relaunching The Gathering of Eagles Foundation, an initiative dedicated to empowering children through education, mentorship, and opportunities for success.

Best known for his gold medal performance in the 4×100-meter relay at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, Mel has spent decades inspiring others with his story of perseverance, discipline, and service. Now, as he marks this milestone birthday, he is focused on leaving a lasting legacy for children in his community and beyond.
“The foundation represents my life’s journey—overcoming obstacles, striving for excellence, and always giving back,” said Mel. “This is my way of ensuring that children have the tools, resources, and encouragement they need to pursue their dreams.”
The relaunch of The Gathering of Eagles Foundation, led by Mel and his wife Debbie, will feature programs centered on youth development, academic enrichment, and athletic mentorship. As part of this effort, the Penders will also introduce a new children’s book series highlighting the early lives of notable athletes—including Mel himself.

In addition, Mel will spend the month of October crisscrossing Atlanta, sharing his story with media, veterans, schools, and community groups as part of his mission to inspire others.
Community leaders, friends, and supporters will gather later in October to celebrate Mel’s birthday and the relaunch of his foundation. Details of upcoming events and opportunities to support the foundation will be announced soon.
Organizations interested in inviting Mel to speak are encouraged to send a letter with details of their request.
